Why is Federer so popular with some tennis fans?
Posted by: | CommentsOf course, he is also unpopular with many people. 1) He is arrogant – recently he said that he is not no.2 in the world – he is either a grand slam champion or no.1, but not no.2; he said a few years ago in the press that Agassi doesn’t worry him anymore because he has beaten him so many times. 2) He makes excuses when he loses – he hardly ever gives his opponents credit when they beat him, saying: “this is a match I should not have lost”, instead of acknowledging that the other guy played better. Don’t you think that this is demeaning to his opponent who played so well to beat him? He said this after he was beaten by Simon and Karlovic, earlier this year. Before the Australian Open Federer said that he was completely recovered from his illness (if there was one) and was feeling very well. He reached the semis beating two very good hard court players in straight sets – Berdych and Blake. Novak was just too strong in the semis. Recently, Federer has been saying that he was playing ill at the Aussie – is that fair to the player who played so well to beat him? He played like a lion against Murray in Shanghai (11 aces and broke Murray twice in the 3rd with massive winners – you can’t do that with a bad back) and still lost, making excuses and not giving Murray any credit afterwards. 3)He is so condescending towards young players – when Murray beat him in Dubai this year he said Murray’s game has not improved, and when Murray beat him in Madrid he said “he needs to grow up and be a man”. Here are some quotes from the website below: “Federer has not been criticized – maybe not been seen – by the media as being arrogant, classless, disgraceful when he loses, discredits his opponents who beat him, disrespectful to young up-and-coming players because he forgot where he came from, because the media chooses not to”…”But there are few who can see Roger for who he truly is, including tennis fans, and even Mirka who had to tell a journalist recently not to wax lyrical to Roger about his achievements because of “how cocky he was already getting”. And, “He is a nasty loser with a deep, deep ugly side to his character that his blind fans can’t see. Piling up excuse after excuse and so condescending to young players…”. Also, “Federer is the biggest brat of a loser tennis has ever seen. He whines and sulks when he loses because he can’t stand it, thinks no one should beat him because he’s so flipping arrogant”.

I would like to add that in my many years of following tennis I have never come across a player with such an arrogant personality. Up until 05 he was my favourite player, but I began to notice his true character – his complete disdain for other players and his use of the press to get into the minds of the younger more vulnerable opponents. It doesn’t matter what a great player he is. Tennis is about sportsmanship on and off the court. Federer must not be regarded as a leader in tennis. Sampras is and so is Agassi.

WINNING mentality!
Posted by: | CommentsHave you got a WINNING mentality, or are you happy with coming second? I think that has been my problem regarding my sporting efforts – always happy just being able to play my favourite sports.(Which were football/soccer and squash until recently when my knees packed in!) If I’d only know this stuff 30 years ago!

A WINNING mentality!
